What makes a monster? What thin veil conceals the evil within us? And what happens when it finally comes out roaring?
The Anatomy of Evil is a visceral reimagining of Robert Louis Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, restructuring the story chronologically to expose the full descent of Dr Henry Jekyll into obsession, paranoia, and self-destruction.
I felt younger, lighter, happier in body”
Blending ensemble physical theatre with stylised movement, fragmented narration, visceral sound, and bold lighting, the production examines the duality of human nature and the shifting balance between civility and instinct. Through a magpie-like fusion of theatrical techniques, Sparkhouse Ensemble transforms Stevenson’s gothic horror into an intense and visually driven contemporary experience.
Edward Hyde, alone, in the ranks of mankind, was pure evil.”
The performance opens with a platform theatre sequence devised in collaboration with Box House Theatre Company; establishing a world where bodies, movement, and rhythm presents the tug-of-war power dynamics, as the line between Jekyll and Hyde begins to fracture.
Created by post A-Level students and university graduates returning to the Cotswolds, The Anatomy of Evil was born from a desire to continue making experimental theatre in rural communities. The production brings together emerging creatives passionate about physical storytelling, ensemble work, and reinventing classic texts for modern audiences. The ensemble is also supported by Edward Bennett, whose feedback, guidance, and occasional direction have helped shape the development of the piece.
Perfect for audiences aged 12+ and those interested in physical theatre, gothic horror, and contemporary reinventions of classic literature. The Anatomy of Evil offers an introduction to more stylised and experimental performance-making.
