POINT-SCORING is a solo show inspired by conversations with claimants and appointees of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) from the Midlands. First created and performed by Black Country based Actor/Theatre-Maker, Jessica Mabel, at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in 2024, this ‘strong piece of political theatre’ is coming to Rep Rising!

The story follows ‘E’ who is married with 2 young boys. She has previously applied and failed for PIP with the help of her husband, and we see her through the process of trying again. Rooted in research, including some verbatim text, the play experiments with location and time, to immerse the audience in a world as chaotic as the one ‘E’ experiences. We see flashbacks of her in the interview room, alongside her real-time struggles in everyday social situations, including every parent’s dread… hosting your child’s birthday party!

The use of projections, soundscapes, and fun props, create a bold, playful and multimedia piece which gives audiences an insight into the world of benefits for individuals with psychiatric conditions. This staged work-in-progress brings Midlands stories to life on a Midlands stage.

The play touched on a topic I consider underrepresented in current stage plays”
