Sir Howard Panter steps down from Birmingham Rep

The Board of Birmingham Rep has announced that the current chair, Sir Howard Panter, has stepped down after four years of service to the theatre.

Under the chairmanship of Sir Howard Panter, Birmingham Rep has achieved remarkable milestones. Notably, he guided the theatre’s reopening after the pandemic-induced lockdown, unveiled an award-winning rebrand, oversaw an immensely successful programme that culminated in multiple West End transfers, among numerous other accomplishments.

Sean Foley, Artistic Director and Rachael Thomas, Executive Director said:

Sir Howard has steered The Rep through the uncertainty of multiple lockdowns and the re-engaging of audiences. He has supported the theatre at the opening of world premieres and award-winning shows and steps down at the end of one of the most successful years in The Rep’s recent history. We would like to extend our gratitude, on behalf of the whole staff team, for his hard-work and dedication.

Sir Howard Panter comments:

I would like to thank the Board, Senior Leadership Team and all the fantastically hard-working people who keep this wonderful theatre at the forefront of British Theatre. I particularly would like to thank Sean, Rachael and the Deputy Chair Ayub Khan at The Rep.”

Ayub Khan MBE will be interim Chair of the Board of Trustees until a successor is found early this year.
