Birmingham Rep seeks contractor for new stage flying system

Birmingham Repertory Theatre is seeking a contractor to deliver a new stage flying system as part of its forthcoming capital works project that will involve replacement of the roof over the main stage and auditorium.

The scope of the works will involve surveying, designing, installing and commissioning a complete replacement fly bar system for use in the House, The Rep’s main 816-seat auditorium.

The capital project is expected to start on site in early 2027 and end in the autumn.  Delivery of the flying system will be scheduled into the overall construction programme as a direct contract award with Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

Any contractors wishing to submit a tender are requested to contact The Rep’s Project Manager, David Stanley, DSA Consultants, via david@dsaconsultants.co.uk who can provide tender documents.

The closing date to submit a tender is 12 noon on Monday 13th July 2026

During the construction works, The Rep will remain open and will continue to produce and present a theatre programme in The Studio. The main 800-seat auditorium, The House, will be closed temporarily. The theatre’s Talent Development and Creative Learning programmes, which work with hundreds of children, young people, adults and artists in the building and across the city, will continue as normal. The Rep’s commercial events subsidiary Unique Venues Birmingham (UVB) will also continue to operate from its usual portfolio of spaces across The Rep and Library of Birmingham.

In April 2026 The Rep was awarded £3.047m from Arts Council England’s Creative Foundations Fund to support these essential works. The Arts Council award will cover the capital costs of the project only. A public fundraising campaign will be launched in due course to raise vital funding for revenue losses accrued during the construction period, including support for The Rep’s wider charitable mission while programme surpluses are not available to support it in the usual way. Full details of the fundraising campaign will be announced in the coming weeks.
