Granta: Best of Young British Novelists

Birmingham Literature Festival 2023

This event has passed

Every ten years, Granta puts together a list of twenty of the best British novelists under the age of forty. We are excited to present two of this year’s Granta cohort, novelists Anna Metcalfe (Chrysalis) and Yara Rodrigues Fowler (there are more things), whose novels offer fresh takes on female solidarity and revolution.

Chrysalis offers a portrait of a female narrator as she is watched by a man in the gym, offered sanctuary by a work colleague and observed by her mother. It presents an unsettling portrait of a woman whose personal transformation sparks a revolution that blurs the line between self-care and narcissism.

there are more things follows the intersecting stories of Melissa and Catarina, set in London and Brazil, exploring the political history of Brazil alongside the class politics of London. Their friendship develops alongside ideas of freedom, revolution and sisterhood.
