Crafting Cultural Identity
with Maddie Ballard & Nina Mingya Powles
This event has passed
During Covid, Maddie Ballard started to make her own clothes. Each essay in her debut collection, Bound, is named after a clothing pattern and follows as, with each new item she makes, she learns new things about craft and art, re-designing her relationship with her body, consumer capitalism and her cultural identity.
Drawing on a patchwork quilt sewn by the poet’s grandfather before she was born, Nina Mingya Powles’ Slipstitch is a poetic sequence exploring cloth, handwork and inheritance. In this pamphlet of poetry, prose and collage, stitching becomes a medium for poetry and patchwork becomes a method of layering the textures and colours of memories and family history.
