Session 1: Directing Unplugged – Create… Then Write

Looking at everyday objects and how then can centre and focus our work. A whole script can come from an Improvisation task around a phone, a chair or a book. We will look at how everyday objects can aid us in our creative funk. Sometimes they make for the best content! As Directors, how do we then make the boring and mundane… exciting.

Session 2: Directing Unplugged – Puppetry and Text

This session will look at how we can marry puppetry into texts and create new meanings in dialogue. Working as a Director, creating a character that only exist with the physical help of the ensemble can change the tone of a piece and allow us to pull alternate meanings from script. It also gives us more creative possibilities. We will also play with how we can strip the text back and focus on just the movement of the ensemble, in creating this character and allowing it to exist in the world.

Session 3: Directing Unplugged – It’s Time to Cut

Editing can feel brutal—especially when it’s someone else’s words on the chopping block. But part of a director’s job is knowing what needs to go. In this session, we’ll lean into the messier side of directing: shaping, trimming, and making bold decisions in the rehearsal room. We’ll explore how to refine scenes with clarity and purpose, and how to lose what’s not serving the story—even if it stings. This is about tightening the work, trusting your instincts, and owning the power of a well-placed cut.
