Description

For / With / By: Festival of European Youth Theatre takes place at The REP from 30 July to 3 August.

On Wednesday 1 August we are holding a day-long symposium for Youth Theatre practitioners, and others interested in the field, which is open to anyone whether or not they are attending the Festival.

Curated by Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, the symposium will be an excellent opportunity to meet other practitioners and explore a range of issues important to the health and development of the sector across Europe.

10.00-10.30 Registration and tea/coffee
 
10.30 – 11.00  In conversation with Simon Stephens (Punk Rock, The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time)
 
11.00-12.00 Panel Discussion – Devising, scripts and the young voice
With a panel of writers/devisers including Simon Stephens, Ola Animashawun and Matt Rutter
 
12.00 -13.15 Workshop Session 1
Option 1 -  Devising with Young Theatre Makers
Rob Salmon (New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich)
Alternative strategies for rehearsal, an exploration of common devising challenges and solutions, and a practical guide to enabling young theatre makers to author original theatrical work derived from their own life experience. 
 
Option 2 - Digital technologies/social media
Hannah Phillips (Outspoken)  
Using Digital Technologies and Social Media in Live Performance Exploring the use of digital technologies and social media as participatory and collaborative making tools in live performance for / with / by young people.

14.15-15.30 Workshop Session 2
 
Option 1 -  Craft and Authenticity – Shaping Great work from participant experience.
 Ola Animashawun, Justine Theman,  Esra Powell and Vanessa Ostick  (Belgrade)
Using their production of 'Rise' as a template, the workshop will explore in-rehearsal creative research techniques, the role of a dramaturg the process of wordsmithing, and the ethos of ongoing development during rehearsal.
 
Option 2 - The Inclusive Rehearsal Room
Eilis Davis (Diverse City) and Richard Hayhow (Open Theatre)  
This workshop will look at the practicalities of opening up your practise to actively include and engage with deaf, disabled and learning disabled participants.
 
15.30-16.00 Tea Break
 
16.00-17.00 Final Plenary - Other Perspectives
Reflections on the day, with an international panel including Peter Hussey (Kildare Youth Theatre), David Peralto  (La Joven Compania), Wojciech Faruga
(ASSITEJ Polska) and Anne Appelbaum (Director Children and Young People, Arts Council England)
 
19.30 PLAYOFF
La Joven Compania, Madrid, Spain
Seven women.
A football field.
A locker room.
The most important match of their lives. 
PLAYOFF is a tragicomedy that reflects about the role of women and women's sports in a society that still presents a terrible machismo. Not only the players are invited to this match: their fears, envies, doubts and dreams will also join a game played by women that only want to live of their passion.

Tickets cost £75 and include lunch and a ticket for PLAYOFF

Fees & Charges
As of 15 January, we now charge a transaction fee of £2.50 on all payment types. This covers administration costs and postage and enables us to provide a dedicated booking service. This charge does not apply to transactions under £10, group bookings over 50 and school group bookings. We also waive this charge if you are a REP Friend.
