Together, We Are The REP
Today is #LoveTheatreDay – a day where theatre is celebrated around the world. It's open to everyone, whether they're working behind the scenes to bring stories to life or audience members who make it all possible.
Our amazing team of people are passionate about creating, making, commissioning and sharing fantastic theatre that speaks to people in Birmingham and beyond. It's great to hear what our work means to audiences.
But there are many more people who make The REP what it is and we want to share the spotlight with them.
Pretty much every day of every academic school year our drama workers are igniting young people's imaginations, whether it's helping them to tell their own stories, pretending to be someone else in another world or going beyond the words of a play or set text.
Every week an invaluable team of volunteers come to support us - instilling a love of theatre through backstage tours and talks and championing our work at fetes and festivals.
Once a week a group of young men get together at The REP as part of Up My Street. With the help of skilled theatre makers they build their confidence, their communication skills and their resilience by learning theatre techniques and by having a place where they can talk and share and where someone can hear them. They've now formed their own company, Lightpost Theatre.
Then there's the weekly art class for local residents, the play-reading group and the weekly youth theatre sessions. And in communities across Birmingham – Sparkbrook, Alum Rock, Erdington and more – our artists are listening and making theatre with and for the many people of our diverse city.
Why do we need theatre? Because it makes us laugh, cry and think. Why do we need our off-stage activities? Because it brings a sense of belonging, discovery and support.
So on this #LoveTheatreDay we'd like to shine a light on the many different people we connect with beyond our stages. We take work out to communities, we listen, we engage, we collaborate. All these people make theatre and they help to make us what we are.
Together, We Are The REP.
