'Serendipitous, exhilarating and interesting' Nia Lane on MonologueSlam
It's less than four weeks until MonologueSlam returns to The REP and we've been busy catching up with previous champions. First up is Nia Lane, telling us all about what she's been up to since she won…
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Nia Lane and I'm 14 years old. I am very passionate about acting and would love to make a career of it. I also like to write my own monologues and scripts from time to time because I love to be creative.
What inspired and encouraged you to audition for MonologueSlam?
I saw a post through social media and thought it would be a great experience for me. I was also thinking of performing my self-written monologue: 'Dirty Dead Husbands' to a live, public audience. At first, I was nervous about auditioning, however as soon as I met everyone I knew it was such a supportive environment to be a part of.
What was it like to take part and how did you feel when you found out you had won?
Taking part was an amazing experience filled with lots of excitement and fun. When they read out my name as the winner I was in shock but felt so thankful and happy. I was feeling so ecstatic being on the stage and remained shocked until the next day!
What have you been up to since the last slam?
Since the last slam, I recently joined an agency (A&J Management) who have given me many new opportunities which I greatly appreciate. I also got my first ever job and did a commercial with 3 Mobile Ireland and filmed out in Romania during the summer. It gave me a real taste of what it's like being an actor and I loved it!
What did you learn or gain from taking part in MonologueSlam?
I gained a lot of confidence from the slam which enabled me to go to auditions with a lot more faith and belief in myself. I also made some new friends who I have kept in touch with.
What would you say to someone who is thinking of taking part in the slam – would you recommend it?
Absolutely! It is such an amazing opportunity to take and just go for it – enjoy the experience!
What three words would you use to describe MonologueSlam?
Serendipitous, exhilarating and interesting.
