The Young REP is Birmingham Repertory Theatre's youth theatre company, working with young people aged 7–25 across Birmingham and the West Midlands. Young people work with professional theatre-makers to create and produce a broad range of high quality theatrical experiences. All of our members will perform at Birmingham Repertory Theatre during their year.
Check this page to stay up to date with our projects and opportunities for children and young people.
What happens at the Young REP?
Every week children and young people from all over the region come to The REP to take part in weekly workshops and rehearsals. They work with our team of professional theatre-makers to produce a range of theatrical productions and projects at The REP.
Each year at the Young REP is totally different. We stage new plays by exciting writers, important classical texts and devise original stories about contemporary issues. At the heart of everything we do there is one key theme: the voices, lives and opinions of children and young people matter.
The Young REP is split in to four age groups:
Juniors (School Years 3, 4, 5 & 6)
Intermediates (School Years 7, 8 & 9)
Seniors (School 10, 11, 12 & 13)
18– 25 (For people between the ages of 18 and 25 who have left school or college)

Young REP Lightpost is a young company made of young black men between the ages of 18-26 from across the region. The company seeks to actively challenge some of the social stigmas and ideas associated with young black men, using theatre as a gateway to create new plays of social and historical importance.
The company originated as part of Up My Street; a scheme that aimed to improve the mental well-being of young African and Caribbean men which was generously funded by MIND.
So far the company has performed its work at conferences, theatres and in Westminster to an audience of national decision-makers and commissioners.
The group meets at The REP every Wednesday at 6:30pm-9pm.
There is no cost involved.

The Young REP is partnered with a number of schools/organisations to run extra-curricular youth theatre groups across the region. Students develop drama skills and collaborate to produce devised productions that they perform at The REP.
I've worked with The REP in a varying capacity for 7 years. During that time they have provided over 1000 students with incredible once in a lifetime opportunities; watching main stage performances, performing in a variety of spaces and meeting staff at the REP during back stage tours.
I can 100% recommend The REP as a worthwhile resource that will benefit any school or educational establishment.
