Madame Ranevskaya is a landowner and the head of her family’s estate. Ranevskaya has been in France for several years and has begun to run out of money, meaning that she can no longer maintain the estate.

Anya
Anya is Madame Ranevskaya’s seventeen year old daughter. Anya has been abroad with her mother and upon returning to the family estate falls in love with Trofimov.

Varya
Varya is 24 years old and is Madame Ranevskaya’s adopted daughter. She has been running the family estate on an ever dwindling budget whilst her mother and siater have been abroad. Varya is in love with Lopakhin, but he seems incapable of proposing to her.

Gaev
Gaev is Madame Ranevskaya’s brother. He hopes to save the family estate and borrows some money in order to do so, but is unsuccessful at the auction of the estate.

Lopakhin
Lopakhin is a businessman who has built his own fortune. He was born into a very poor family and is a self made man and an example of the new ‘bourgeoisie’ in Russia. Lopakhin is in love with Varya but is yet to propose to her.

Trofimov
Trofimov is a student who has recently dropped out of university. He was once the tutor to Madame Ranevskaya’s now dead son, and has been living on the estate whilst Ranevskaya has been away.

Simeonov - Pishchik
Simeonov-Pishchik is a landowner. A somewhat comedic character, Pishchik is another example of the Russian bourgeoisie, and has amassed a great deal of wealth. He is a very boisterous character and is well liked by Madame Ranevskaya and her family.

Charlotta Ivanovna
Charlotta is a governess for Madame Ranevskaya’s family.

Yepikhodov
Yepikhodov is a clerk and a rather clumsy character. He is in love with the housemaid Dunyasha but she has repeatedly spurned his advances.

Dunyasha
Dunyasha is a housemaid on Madame Ranevskaya’s estate. Yepikhodov is in love with her and has proposed, but Dunyasha has refused him.

Firs
Firs is 87 years old and has been a manservant on Madame Ranevskaya’s estate for many years.

Yasha
Yasha is a young manservant on Madame Ranevskaya’s estate. Much like Yepikhodov, Yasha is trying to attract the attention of Dunyasha, without success. At the end of the play as the cherry orchard is destroyed, he decides to leave Russia for good.
