Cast And Characters

Mary Lennox

Mary is ten years old. After her parents’ deaths, she is sent from her home in India to live in Yorkshire with her uncle Archibald Craven. With her spoilt behaviour, Mary finds hersefl lonely and friendless in her new and unfamiliar surroundings. However, after exploring the house and grounds of Misselthwaute Manor, she makes discoveries which will change her forever.

Colin Craven

Colin is ten years old and is Archibald’s son – Mary’s cousin. Colin’s mother died shortly after he was born, and Archibald now spends most of his time away from Misselthwaite Manor, unable to bear the reminder of his wife that his son has become. Colin is looked after by the house servants and is very lonely and spoilt. He is a sickly child, convinced that he too will soon die like his mother before him.
Played by James Gillan.

Archibald Craven

Colin’s father, Mary’s uncle and the master of Misselthwaite Manor, Archie Craven spends most of his time away from home, unable to bear the memories of his dead wife that the manor brings. By the end of the play however, an unexpected surprise brings a change of heart.

Dickon Sowerby

Dickon is twelve years old and has spent his life amongst the countryside and wildlife of Missel Moor. He and his family work at the manor and live a very different life from the privileged upbringing of Mary and Colin.
Played by Thomas Aldridge.

Martha Sowerby

Martha is Dickon’s sister and Mary’s maidservant at Misselthwaite Manor. Martha is kind to Mary, and encourages her to explore the grounds of the manor.
Played by Evelyn Hoskins.

Mrs Medlock

As the main housekeeper of Misselthwaite Manor, Mrs Medlock does her best to obey Colin’s constant demands. Although she seems stern, she proves herself to have a good, kind heart.

Dr Craven

Dr Percival Craven is Archibald’s brother and Colin’s uncle. Dr Craven tends to Colin’s imaginary medical conditions, and is amazed by the change in Colin’s condition as he explores the manor grounds with Mary.

Ben Weatherstaff

Ben is the grumpy Head Gardener at Misselthwaite Manor. He befriends Mary, helping her to find her late aunt’s secret garden.
