- The 100th victim of the troubles is Ulster is a girl aged 14. Urgent talks at Chequers between the Prime Minister Edward Heath and his Irish counterpart Jack Lynch are underway. Another 1500 troops are sent to the province
- Fears of a new terrorist campaign in the capital are sparked by a bomb blast which rips through the Post Office Tower
- Japanese Emperor Hirohito arrives on a state visit to Britain
- A cyclone in India kills over 5,000 people and destroys a million homes
- The government announces that the Ulster police are to be armed with automatic weapons
- In India 90 Indian troops die in border clashes with the Pakistanis
November
- The continuing clashes along the border between India and East Pakistan are threatening to erupt into full scale war. Mrs Gandhi declares a state of emergency
December
- In New Delhi India recognises Bangladesh. Pakistan breaks off diplomatic relations with India
- In Dacca 300 children die when Indian planes bomb an orphanage
- The official government of East Pakistan resigns as Indian troops close in on the city
- The Queen’s allowance is to be doubled from £475,000 to £980,000. Most of it will go on salaries for her staff. She is said to be pleased and a little surprised by the size of the increase
- The two week war between India and Pakistan ends in defeat for Pakistan when President Khan accepted Mrs Gandhi’s ceasefire ultimatum. India’s total casualties in the war were given as 10,633 including 2,307 dead. Pakistani casualties are not yet known but are believed to be much heavier
