Workshops
We worked for two weeks in each country with groups of children and we noticed a real pattern when we improvised bridging that gap: they made contact, followed by playing together and then they would make a friendship.
We asked them the ‘big’ questions – ‘How do you save the world?’ ‘How do you avoid war?’ We asked them what they were worried about and what were their big issues. We noticed a common ground between the countries around war, environment, safety, too many rules and their fears, ‘the monsters’; both real and metaphorical.
We also collected their stories of children being wiser than adults.
The shape of our play came from these workshops. We started with a broad story, then created the characters. Through improvisation we narrowed down the story and setting and included things that the children had come up with. There is still quite a lot to change and we keep learning as we go.
