The battlefield

We see Iorek and Brother Jasper fighting. Brother Jasper fires his gun and injures Iorek. Brother Jasper runs off into the battle.

Iorek warns the children about Brother Jasper and how he is determined to kill them. Will says he must take the knife to Lord Asriel. Iorek wishes them well and says they will always be welcome in the land of the bears.

Lyra sees the Authority’s crystal casket, lying where it fell on the battlefield. She doesn’t realise it is the Authority inside. They peer in to the casket and see an incredibly old and wizened angel. The old man looks in direst pain. Will decides to use the knife to cut him out of the casket. Air rushes in to the casket and the Authority starts to smile. He becomes fainter and fainter and finally disappears.

They plough on through the battlefield in search of Lord Asriel.

Meanwhile, Lord Asriel discovers the empty casket. Serafina flies in and tells him the children have released the Authority. Serefina leaves as Mrs Coulter arrives. Lord Asriel realises that he no longer needs to create his own world; he needs only to create a safe world for Lyra. The prophecy is that Lyra and Will will inherit the new Garden of Eden and Lord Asriel and Mrs Coulter have no role to play in that. They realise that their purpose is fulfilled.

Suddenly the abyss appears before them. They realise their final task is to jump in to it.

Just then Lyra and Will appear. Lyra cannot see her parents but they can see her.

The Brother Jasper appears with his rifle. He aims it at Lyra.

Mrs Coulter steps in front of him. She takes one of his hands and Lord Asriel takes another and they pull him into the abyss with them.
