On the shores of the land of the dead
Lyra’s death leaves her at the shore. A boat is heard swishing towards the shore. Pantalaimon is distressed and begs Lyra to turn back. A boatman appears and tells Lyra that she can only proceed if she leaves Pantalaimon on the shore. Lyra becomes distressed and asks the boatman if Pantalaimon can wait on the shore and they will pick him up on their way back. The boatman says they won’t be coming back. Lyra makes the painful decision to say goodbye to Pantalaimon. Both Pantalaimon and Lyra are in agony.
