Brother Jasper reveals some truths to Mrs Coulter

Brother Jasper comes to see Mrs Coulter in her cell. He asks Mrs Coulter who Roger is and she explains he was Lyra’s friend from Oxford. She also tells Brother Jasper that Roger is dead. He falls to his knees; how can this be? The alethiometer is saying that Lyra has gone to find Roger in a land of endless grey and misery. This goes against everything Brother Jasper believes about death. Surely, God provides a beautiful heaven for the dead?

While Brother Jasper is weak the golden monkey steals the powerful medallion and gives it to Mrs Coulter, which weakens him even more. To complete the torture the golden monkey starts to strangle Brother Jasper’s daemon. Mrs Coulter asks him what Lyra’s secret name is and he reveals that it is Eve. Mrs Coulter discovers that in the prophecy Will and Lyra are Adam and Eve, and if Lyra ‘falls’ or is tempted by the flesh, Dust will triumph for ever more.

An explosion is heard outside. Lord Roke appears. The golden monkey fixes Brother Jasper’s daemon in a grip, paralysing it. Mrs. Coulter flings Brother Jasper away from her. He falls to the ground and writhes in pain. Soldiers of Lord Asriel enter and hustle her to the door. Armed clerics enter and fire. Lord Roke is wounded. Mrs Coulter runs for it and Lord Roke tells her to leave him behind.
