Father and son

Jopari has found Will. He heals his bleeding hand and reveals that he is his father. He reveals the origins of the subtle knife too, explaining that ancient philosophers from Cittagazze created it but it soon became more powerful then they were, and caused the spectres to be able to creep through the gaps between the worlds and cause their havoc.

Jopari reveals to Will that he cannot escape his destiny. In fighting and winning the knife he has become a warrior, and with the knife he has the power to save the human race and protect them from all evil. He tells Will he must take the knife to Lord Asriel.

Suddenly Ruta Skadi arrives and stabs Jopari. Will is devastated. The father he has looked for all his life is dead before him. Ruta Skadi then stabs herself.

Serafina arrives and Will discovers that Lyra has been taken. He must make an impossible decision: follow the instructions of his dying father or go in search of Lyra.

At that moment two angels arrive, Will realises that he is more powerful then they are and despite their demands that he follow them to Lord Asriel, after consulting the alethiometer, he demands that they lead him to Lyra.
