The Torre degli Angeli

Lyra and Will arrive at the tower in Cittagazze. An old man – Giacomo Paradisi – is at the top of the tower, fighting over a knife with an agile young man: this is Tullio. Paradisi is bloodied and wounded. Tullio grabs the knife from Paradisi and disappears to descend down the interior of the tower.

Lyra screams at Will to get the knife from Tullio and Will fights him for it. As Lyra and Will disappear in to the tower with the knife, Tullio is consumed by the spectres.

In the tower they meet Paradisi. Will realises two of his fingers were cut off in the struggle for the knife. Paradisi shows him that he has lost the exact two same fingers, lost in his youth as he struggled to capture the knife.

Paradisi warns the children not to give the knife to the one who has asked them for it. He explains that it has the power to cut windows between worlds. Together with Paradisi the children practice creating and then shutting a window between worlds.
