Trollesund

As the Gyptians scatter to gather weapons Lyra is told to stay by the harbour. As he leaves Father Coram announces that he is off to meet a notable witch.

Iorek, a dis-armoured armoured bear staggers towards them. He is clearly drunk. Despite Pantalaimon’s warnings Lyra speaks to him and asks him to fight the Gobblers with her and the Gyptians. The bear explains he can’t because he has no armour, the humans of Trollesund have stolen it. Lyra strikes a deal with the bear; if she can tell him where the humans have hidden his armour he will come and fight with her. Using the alethiometer she discovers it is in the house of the priest. The bear, who is called Iorek bounds off to reclaim his armour.

Meanwhile the Gyptians come back. They have found Trollesund unwelcoming. Father Coram returns from his meeting with the witch, who he tells us is called Serafina Pekkala, who he explains is the Queen of the Lapland witches. She has sent a creature to guide them on their journey inland. It is a snow goose called Kaisa.

Kaisa is Serefina Pekkala’s personal daemon. She explains she knows where the children are, and how local people call it “Bolvangar”. “Fields of evil.”

Just at this moment angry Trollesund townsfolk appear looking for the girl who was talking to the bear. Just as things are starting to get nasty a crash is heard and Iorek enters The priest rushes into view. Iorek appears in his rusty armour. Everyone scatters. Iorek advances on the Mayor, lifts him with one paw and prepares to knock his head off with the other. Lyra shouts at Iorek to stop. Then a gunshot is heard and Lee Scorsby enters as the townsfolk scatter. It turns out that Lee and Iorek know each other and have fought alongside each other in previous battles. Its agreed they can join the party.
