Lyra and Pantalaimon on the run

It’s night-time and Lyra and Pantalaimon are tired and hungry. They have been dodging Tartar guards for hours. They stop to buy a hot coffee when Pantalaimon spots a suspicious man in a top-hat who tries to talk to Lyra. To get rid of him Lyra tells a fantastic lie about her dad being a murderer, but just after he disappears a security-light flashes on and a siren blows. Two Tartars appear with wolf-daemons. Lyra and Pantalaimon run and are nearly caught. Then they discover Tony Costa who has shot the Tartars with his arrow.

Tony, and his friend Ben, explain there is a plan afoot to save the disappeared children. Tony explains that there’s a ship at harbour, leaving at midnight, under the captaincy of Lord John Faa himself, the Lord of the Western gyptians. The ship is due to sail up to the Arctic, to find the kids and to bring them back home. Lyra tells Tony she wants to come with him. He resists but she is determined.
