Bolvangar

Lyra is checked in by an expressionless nurse. She is put in a room with other girls. Checking they are not being heard they explain to Lyra what has been happening to them. One girl explains how, ’They give us tests, and then they lie us down and they take our temperature. They’re always going on about our daemons. Finding out how heavy they are an’ all. They got a weighing-machine, and your daemon gets on to it, and then they write things down and take his photo. But it’s the Dust they’re measuring. Yeah, they talk about Dust non-stop’.

Lyra spots Roger amongst a group of boys. They manage to have a snatched conversation. Lyra tells Roger about the gyptians, Lee Scoresby and Iorek but Roger thinks it sounds too fantastical and accuses her of making it up. Then Kaisa the snow-goose daemon arrives and explains the Gyptians have been delayed but the Witches have agreed to join the battle. Kaisa tells Roger to tell the children to prepare to escape.

At that point voices are heard and Mrs Coulter can be seen arriving on her snow sleigh. Lyra opens a door to try and hide but a terrible noise emits from it as it is where the severed children’s Daemons are kept. Two doctors appear and grab Lyra.
