Writer Development

The REP is committed to commissioning and producing new work and typically produce between five and ten world premiers every year. To support this strand of The REP’s programme, we run a range of developmental writers’ programmes, designed to nurture new talent at the early stages of a writer’s career. We also provide a dedicated space to explore new ideas and different approaches to making theatre, to develop new plays and support emerging companies and artists.

The REP is not currently able to accept unsolicited scripts, but we maintain a database of professional and aspiring playwrights whom we will contact as opportunities arise. Email writing@birmingham-rep.co.uk to be added to this database.

The REP has a particular interest in the following types of new writing:

  • Writing for early years audiences
  • New plays for our resident youth theatre
  • Adaptations
  • Writing in response to specific briefs
  • Community plays
  • Writer/performer work
  • Collaborative writing
  • Site specific plays
  • Cross-discipline writing
  • Digital theatre

The REP is currently developing an online playwriting platform that facilitates writers and artists through the process of exploring new ways of working collaboratively from anywhere across the globe.
