Looking back to East Is East
As the BAFTA award-winning comedy is currently entertaining audiences here at The REP we’ve delved into the archives and found a selection of photos from the very first production.
East Is East premiered at The REP in 1996 and as the director of our new production, Iqbal Khan says “it’s wonderful to see the play return to the scene of its first production, moving from the studio theatre to the main stage. More than a decade on from its debut, the play has achieved the status of a popular modern classic. It’s very accurate to the time and very specific about the experience of a mixed-race family.”
Take a look at the photo gallery on the right to see the pictures from the very first production.

Lovely. Hadn't grasped quite how many of the cast in the Rep debut went on into the film.
