In the grounds of an imposing manor house, in the heart of the Yorkshire Moors, there’s a door that once led to a magical garden, a door that’s been locked for many years, the key buried and all but forgotten.
When ten year old Mary Lennox is suddenly orphaned she must make the journey from sun-baked India to live with her distant uncle in wintry Yorkshire. Spoilt and unhappy it’s only when Mary meets a local lad, Dickon, and learns of the lost garden that she begins to take an interest in the house, its inhabitants and the stories it holds. But can the two of them find the key to the garden and unlock the secrets growing inside?
This spellbinding brand new musical adaptation of the classic children’s novel is guaranteed to blossom in the imaginations of children young and old.

The Secret Garden is likely to last two and a half hours, including interval.
We don't have a more precise runtime at this stage, but when we do it will be posted on this page in the right hand column.
Clare from The REP
When are you going to put up a full cast list?
Jim from Birmingham
Hi Jim, the cast list is now online.
Clare from The REP
Can you tell me if you're having anymore audio pre-show tours other than 14th December please.
Jean Green from Birmingham
Hi Jean. Yes, there will also be an audio-described performance on the 7th of January with a pre-show touch tour.
Clare from The REP
Can I bring my 3 year old to see Secret Garde with her older sister or is she a little young for it?
Jo from Bimingham
Hi Jo. The age suggestions are guidelines rather than hard rules, but she might be happier with Sunflowers And Sheds, which is a sister show to The Secret Garden and is specifically aimed at younger children.
Clare from The REP
Hi Rep. How much would it be for my son age 12?
taylor from telford
Hi Taylor. Under 14s are entitled to a discount. Your son's ticket would cost between £10 and £15 depending on the date of the performance.
Clare from The REP
Does Sunflower and Sheds run concurrently with The Secret Garden at the same venue, both at the Birmingham Rep? Reason for the question being, is that I may wish to take an older child to The Secret Garden whilst the younger children go with another adult to their age appropriate show. The children are all from out of town.
How long is the performance of Sunflower and Sheds?
The older child is 8 years old and therefore do you think The Secret Garden would be more suitable?
Terry from Birmingham
Hi, I want to bring my ten year old daughter and 2 friends to see secret garden for her birthday . Can you tell me if there are any discounts for kids as it is going to be very expensive if I have to pay full price for the children? Her birthday is 17th of Dec, so we would be looking at coming the week commencing 20th Dec. Thanks Emma
Emma Briscoe from Fenny Compton
Hi Terry. It sounds like you'd be best served by a visit between 14 and 22 December. On those dates there are afternoon matinees of The Secret Garden in our main auditorium and afternoon matinees of Sunflowers And Sheds in our studio theatre. (Please be aware that the shows aren't entirely concurrent. The show for younger children starts earlier and is shorter.)
Clare from The REP
Hi Emma. As your group will include at least two people under the age of 14, you'll be eligible for a discounted Family ticket.
Clare from The REP
I loved the Lucy Simon/Marsha Norman Secret Garden musical. If I come to see this new version, what differences will I notice? What special new qualities would you draw omy attention to that would be unique or in some way an improvement on the Simon musical?
Robert Wills from Toronto Canada
It would be very useful to have a seating plan and the box office opening times on the web site.
Thanks very much.
QD from Hall Green
Hi Robert. I haven't seen the Simon/Norman adaptation myself, so I can't speak to specific differences. This production is faithful to the original story with fab new musical numbers and a really inventive set.
Clare from The REP
QD, the box office opening times are available in our Visit section. (Typically from 10am-8pm Monday to Saturday.)
The seating configuration changes depending on the production, but a seating plan for each show is available by clicking the blue 'Book Now' button near the top of the page.

Just returned from the Friday performance of The Secret Garden, and wanted to say how fantastic we all thought the show was. Congratulations to all involved, we cannot recommend it highly enough.

jo from redditch
I took my mother to see this on 23 December as part of her Christmas present and have come into work raving about it, recommending it to everyone who will listen (as well as those who didn't have any choice but to listen!) This is a fantasic production, I highly recommend it. My mother and I both enjoyed it tremendously! Thank you for helping to make my mum's present a truly memorable experience. Also we ate in the Rep Restaurant beforehand and the service/food was also of an excellent quality and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend that service either.
Anne from Rowley Regis
Belated thanks. We thoroughly enjoyed the matinee performance on Sat 18th Dec. Such a shame that the weather kept so many people away. Full credit to the cast for carrying on regardless.
Paul Fearon from Sutton Coldfield
Another creative performance from the Rep. This was an imaginative interpretation, with a particularly strong leading lady playing Mary. There were several characters whose performances were exceptional. In particular, the "skipping" sequence, where Martha skipped and sang a very complicated song should be commended.
Although the scenery at times was minimal(not a criticism), as with previous performances at the Rep,, full use was made of the circular theme, with the rotating stage providing a vehicle for much movement within the show. Lighting was also used very effectively, providing pattern and colour throughout. The use of the suspended illuminated tubes to represent the willow tree, was particularly innovative.
The show dealt with sensitive issues carefully and yet balanced this with humerous moments, which were brilliantly excecuted.
CGN from Dudley
Hi, Just found this web page whilst browsing for "The secret Garden". Can you please advise if you will be touring with this production. I am willing to travel to see this as my daughter absolutely loves the film.
Mrs R Thakrar from north london
Hello Mrs Thakrar, I'm afraid this production has ended. Our Christmas show next year will be Sleeping Beauty.

Please can you email me the running time for The Secret garden? Many thanks
