By Henrik Ibsen, Adapted by Mike Poulton

Married to the respectable Dr Wangel, Ellida has a secure, comfortable but land-locked life. She is constantly drawn towards the sea. As memories of a past love threaten to overwhelm her will she suffocate on dry land, or find freedom across the ocean?

The Lady From The Sea is one of Ibsen’s most lyrical, hopeful and rarely performed plays. Director Lucy Bailey adapted and directed the first British stage version of Tennessee Williams’ screen play Baby Doll at The REP in 1999. More recently she has directed acclaimed productions of Titus Andronicus (The Globe) and Tonight At Eight Thirty (Chichester Festival).

“Vivid, inventive and intelligent, Lucy Bailey’s production of Ibsen’s 1888 drama has much to recommend it…this staging has a lush theatricality balanced by delicate moments of pain and tenderness, desolation and connection.”
The Times

“It is a delight to see the theatre right on track with this later work from the Norwegian playwright…Mike Poulton’s adaptation hits all the right notes with a finely tuned production.”
Birmingham Mail

“This production of an Ibsen rarity is a stunning return to form, demonstrating what this theatre does best…this production by Lucy Bailey has been treated with the most sophisticated theatrical craft”
Birmingham Post
