The Grapes Of Wrath
Tue 20 Oct 2009 – Sat 31 Oct 2009
Main House
Adapted by Frank Galati
Based on the novel by John Steinbeck
The Joads, a family of impoverished Oklahoman sharecroppers, lose everything when their farm is repossessed after a devastating drought and are driven from their home to make the monumental trek Westward to California. Seduced by the prospect of opportunity and dignity, they invest everything they have in the journey. When forced to face the possibility that California may not after all be the promised land, they have no choice but to go on; nothing is left for them in Oklahoma.
Frank Galati’s groundbreaking adaptation of Steinbeck’s epic novel won two Tony Awards on Broadway. A plea for social justice and compassion, The Grapes Of Wrath provides the perfect canvas for a vast ensemble cast and is an all too timely examination of a nation in search of itself.
Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck’s other novels include Of Mice And Men and East Of Eden.
Chichester Festival Theatre Artistic Director Jonathan Church returns to The REP along with the creative team that was responsible for the sell-out Olivier Award-winning production of Steinbeck’s Of Mice And Men starring Matthew Kelly.
“Not since Nicholas Nickleby has there been so classic an example of a great national book becoming an equally great theatrical event”
Herald Tribune
Cast includes Sorcha Cusack

A wonderful production of this classic play. Strong casting throughout, a most effective multi purpose setting which suggests well the scale of the journey the characters are embarking upon and the most magnificent thunderstorm I've seen and heard in the theatre for a long time. The final moments of the play are very moving and very tastefully directed. Another triumph for the Rep. in what is turning out to be a great season - go and see it!!

It would be good to have a cast list available in the theatre. Many of us can't afford a programe Just a coment - not reply expected

One of the most powerful plays we have ever seen ,the cast were brilliant. The ending was truly touching and left the audience silent for a long second. An amazing set and wonderful direction in these turbulent times a must for everyone
Steph from The REP
Hi Patricia - thanks for your message. Just to let you know that free cast lists are available for all Main House performances and most Door performances. These are available from the cloakroom counter.
john from Ravenshead
Following the above comments about cast lists, I was expecting to see them freely available on my visit this afternoon. This is not the case: they have to be asked for, and the lady obtained one from the far side of a stand in the cloakroom area. This strikes me as a very sharp and dubious practice. I was told that they were not allowed to have them on show as they get all over the place. The National Theatre seems to cope! It looks as if the REP does not want audiences to know that cast lists are printed, so as to force audiences to buy programmes.
Steph from The REP
Hello John – thanks for your message. You make a good point that perhaps the availability of our cast lists isn’t as obvious as it could be. We have taken your comment on board and from this evening there will be a prominent notice at the cloakroom to let customers know that cast lists are available.

Excellent. Of Mice and Men was brilliant so I am looking forward to this show. I need to read the novel!
