Set among Irish Americans in New York, Richard Bean’s dark, glinting, funny play spans three turbulent decades.

Young fireman Michael Doyle decides to live up to his Irish heritage by joining the IRA. He’s recruited by Costello, the charismatic “Big Fellah”, who wants to use Doyle’s brownstone apartment in The Bronx as a safe house for an escaped killer. But it soon becomes clear that someone is leaking information to the FBI

Richard Bean’s plays include Under The Whaleback, Harvest (Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Play), Honeymoon Suite, The English Game and most recently the controversial England People Very Nice for the National Theatre.

Max Stafford-Clark’s Out of Joint company has visited The REP with Dreams Of Violence, Flight Path, Testing The Echo and The Permanent Way. This is their first collaboration with the popular and provocative Lyric Hammersmith.
