The Door
By Lutz Hübner
In an English translated version by Zoë Svendsen
Now that the car park next door to The REP is closed, roads and car parks around The REP get very busy in the evenings, especially when there are big events at the NIA and Symphony Hall. We advise you to check their websites before your visit, and to allow extra time for your journey.
Four teenagers take a day trip to Cologne. By the end of the night, their world has been turned upside down. One is dead, two are in police custody, and the fourth is recovering from stab wounds. And it is the job of Kobert, a police psychologist, to find out what has happened.
Lutz Hübner’s hard-hitting play about sexual attitudes, provocation and intercultural confusion, is based on the true story of an honour killing.
Originally produced in Germany in 2005 this play was subsequently banned in 2006. With the ban now lifted this new production marks the UK premiere.
Supported by the Goethe-Institut.

Steph from The REP
Hello Jayne - Respect is approximately 1 hour 20 minutes - and there is no interval.
Marie from Birmingham
My year 11 son and his friends are struggling to find a play they can relate to and write about in forthcoming exams as their love of the classics is non existant. Is this play suitable for them to watch without adult supervision?
Steph from The REP
Hi Marie - Thanks for your message - I think Respect would be a really great play for your son and his friends to come and watch. I should mention that it does contain strong language, violence and sexual references, so as long as you're comfortable with that I would suggest that this play would be an excellent one for them to discuss in exams. 'Respect' also forms part of a series of plays which are about teenagers, so if they wanted to come and see more than one piece in order to compare and contrast then I would also recommend 'Random' and 'Desert Boy'. Whilst each play covers some similar themes, they are approached in very different ways, which would give a great opportunity for the boys to appreciate different forms of performance and writing. I hope this helps.

Mrs Deacon from West Midlands
I came to see this play on Friday 30th April and thought it was great and the acting was great. I have a 16 yr old who I think would benefit this performance, I have been told that if you are under 26yrs you dont have to pay? Please let me know as I think him and a few of his friends would like this play. Thank you
shannon

Saw Respect last week - absolutely fabulous. Had us gripped from beginning to end. Superb acting, and very effective set. Gave us lots to think and talk about afterwards.
Steph from The REP
Hello Mrs Deacon - thanks for your message - I'm pleased to hear that you enjoyed Respect. We are part of the Arts Council 'A Night Less Ordinary' scheme whereby we give a number of free tickets away to 14-26 year olds on Friday evenings. If these are all gone we also have a 'Mad To Miss' discount for 14-26 year olds where we have a number of tickets for just £4.99 in The Door on Mon-Fri eves. If your son telephones the Sales Team on 0121 236 4455, they will be pleased to let him know what discounted tickets are still available.

Saw this last night (7th) and thought the performance was fantastic. Do you know if this the play is going to go on tour to another theatre after this? I got the tickets through the ‘A night less Ordinary’ scheme. I think this sort of play is perfect for people my age to get them to experience the theatre. Without this scheme I wouldn’t have thought twice about going to watch it. Thank you for a great night.
Rob from Edinburgh
Hi, I just want say i saw the show and i thought it was unbelievable. The performances were excellent and the set was beautiful. I was in Birmingham for the weekend and it was so good i went the following evening and i was wondering if there will be a tour of this production because it speaks out in many levels. The audiences around the UK would be gripped by this wonderfull peice of theatre. I really hope it does because i organise theatre groups in Edinburgh and if this was on, i gaurantee half of Edinburgh will be coming with me more than once. Thank you for putting on a wonderful show.
Steph from The REP
Thank you all for your fantastic messages. We were really proud of this piece and especially of the response we got from you all. We currently have no plans to tour the play, though if we did we would of course announce on this website so do keep an eye on it. Thanks again, Steph
