It’s Salford 1971 and George Khan, owner of the local fish and chip shop is determined to bring his family up in the traditional manner. His seven children on the other hand have ideas of their own. One’s already left home to be a hairdresser, his daughter prefers playing football to wearing a sari and now 18 year old Saleem wants to study art while 12 year old Sajit is about to be transformed from a shy gawky boy into a self-confident teenager.
With one disastrous arranged marriage in the family already, George plots to bring his next two sons into line by marrying them off to the daughters of Mr Shah. When the Khan kids begin to oppose their father’s blundering attempts to control their lives, his English wife Ella is forced to make a choice between her husband and the right of her children to make their own ways in the world.
Caught between the bell-bottoms and shalwar kameez East Is East is a hugely warm-hearted and hilarious story of what happens when two cultures clash within one family.
Written by Ayub Khan-Din East Is East received its world premiere at The REP in 1996, where it became an instant hit and was subsequently made into a BAFTA award-winning film.

gavina from Birmingham
I saw the original play in 1996 - and I am looking forward to seeing it again on stage - some of the surprises in the story worked better on stage having seen the really fun film that care soon afterwards - the original company were almost all of the actors in the film - this new production is going to be different for sure, but I am still keen to see it.
tahir from birmingham
Hi Gavina
Thanks for your message - there are currently no plans to tour this production, so catch it in Birmingham if you can!
Steph from The REP

Hi, can you tell me what age this production is suitable for? thanks
Sarah Hayat from Birmingham
Just Came back from the opening....ABSOLUTELY amazing...the actors were brilliant, good flow of the story, raw emotions were stirred, an amazing set and good use of lighting to set the scenes.
Highly recommends this show.
indeed this was worthy of the sold out audience that was present tonight.
Zaf from Birmingham
hi i was just wondering if there is an age restriction for east is east as i would like to take my 11 year old brother thanks, vicki.
vicki from birmingham
Saw the show on the opening night - you WILL not be dissappointed. Amazing set, the best I have seen in a long time. Very very funny show yet it made you think. Black comedy at its best. Watch out for George, you have got to laugh or sympathise with him. He was played wonderfully. Will see again if funds allow...
Sue from Wolverhampton

Thanks everyone for your great comments on East Is East! To those who asked about age suitability, the play does contain quite a lot of strong language and some violence, so it's not suitable for children. If you'd like to bring children to the theatre we do have lots of plays aimed at younger ones - look out for the little grey 'family friendly' icon next to shows on the http://www.birmingham-rep.co.uk/whats-on/ page.
Steph from The REP
hey, just came back from the theatre, the play was brilliant and the acting amazing, especially the parts of George and Ella! wicked! highly recommend it! Im gonna definitely see the film soon as well:)

Went to see East is East last night, it was really good, infact it was better than I expected. I will be recommending it to friends at work and I know my girlfriend will be doing the same.
I think the casting was spot on, Archie Lal's portrayal of George was really good but I also really enjoyed the 'parker coats' performance...
I would like to say that there is frequent strong language, it didn't bother me but it wouldn't be suitable for children.
If you are thinking of going to see this, just go I promise you will enjoy the night!
Thanks
Chris from Birmingham
Totally agree with Chris, Archie Lal's performance was oscar winning. Loved the whole production. Well done to all involved!
Leah from Brum
i came along to see the play after seeing it was in the birmingham comedy festival. i did wonder if it was going to be funny, but it really was. the little kid in the parka is great. what a great play. really good sets as well. and a good message about belonging (so it's not all just funny - the best comedy makes you think).
Tee from Sandwell
once I heard that Radio XL were giving away tickets for this I was on the phone everyday for a week and finally won a pair of tickets, so the ones we bought have been used to bring along a few friends. this will no doubt be a great performance, reminds me soooo much of my childhood. just can't wait for the show tonight 01/10/09
Arzuman Sayed from Birmingham
Brilliant! We came on Monday night. It's very clever - extremely funny in places, yet sad and poignant in others. I agree with advice from the Rep - I certainly wouldn't have thought suitable for anyone Under 14. There is a lot of strong language, but it all 'fits in'. A great evening out, thanks!
Cath from Birmingham
This play is the dogs ********, simon nagra rocked it-this man is too funny!!!!!
Dharmender Rai from Coventry
This was a great production and definitely should be on tour. Although the play was well cast all round, with strong performances by Archie Lal and Belinda Lang as George and Ella, for me the star was James McGlynn as Sajit (Parka coat boy!). The sets were very well designed and gave a very good flavour of 1970s Salford - I loved the roof tops and canal bridge sets. Congratulations to the Rep and all involved for a great performance.
Rachel from Birmingham

lashmi midda from birmingham
this play was absolutly the best it was really funny and potrayed the film excellently. the religous meaning is still exemplifiyed even though the play is flooded with humour. the actors were brilliant
monica and jaya from walsall
went to see the play last night-excellent. Really enjoyed it after seeing the film a while ago. The play is REALLY funny but still retains some of the more serious issues. Re the 'is it suitable for children' comment, I took my 15 year old son and he loved it, although there is some strong language it's no more than they hear in the playground! Well done cast and production team.
al60uk from birmingham
BRILLIANT,HAD A FANTASTIC COUPLE OF HOURS,WELL DONE TO ALL THE CAST,BUT MOSTLY WHAT A TRUELY WELL WRITTEN SCRIPT.....
Sue Keenahan from Birmingham
We did not enjoy this performance: It was raucous contained an excess of bad language and reduced a serious subject to a farcical status. Sorry Rep not one of your better productions.
Kathleen & David Ibbotson from Coleshill

Went to see the play last week, it was brilliant and I would definitely recommend it. Well done to all the cast and backstage crew. The effects and the set was really good and very well used.

I came to see this show and it is fanstastic. Despite the fact that i had seen the film i still found my self sitting on the edge of my seat! the use of set is amazing and has given me a lot of inspiration for my set deign at college. i strongly recommend you see the show as despite the face that it is set in the 70's it is still very relevant today. my over all rating 9/10
Dani from Birmingham
this was worth a visit. AMAZING :)
Carys from Shepeh
We went to see it with our GCSE Drama group. The effects within the play helped us profoundly with our coursework and our workshop examination.
It intrigued us as performers and was extremely amazing to have the chance to be given such great ideas!
