Birmingham Repertory Theatre Company presents
Dancing At Lughnasa
Fri 19 Feb 2010 – Sat 6 Mar 2010
Main House
By Brian Friel
Now that the car park next door to The REP is closed, roads and car parks around The REP get very busy in the evenings, especially when there are big events at the NIA and Symphony Hall. We advise you to check their websites before your visit, and to allow extra time for your journey.
Summer 1936. In a house in a remote part of County Donegal the five Mundy sisters live a simple life with their older brother Jack, a missionary priest, and seven-year old Michael. Barely able to make ends meet, the sisters acquire their first wireless radio and dream of happiness and love.
Years later as Michael looks back at the events of that Summer, a tender and passionate portrait of the Mundy sisters’ lives unfolds.
Brian Friel’s masterpiece is a bittersweet reflection on life in rural Ireland in the 1930s. Premiered in 1990, Dancing At Lughnasa (pronounced Loon-essa) has previously been produced in the West End and on Broadway, winning an Olivier Award and three Tony Awards.

I am going to see this play. I am over in birmingham at University. I read the play in school and carried out coursework on it and also watched the film. I can't wait to see the play on stage. I know it is going to be brilliant!
Steph from The REP
Hello there - we don't have a running time for thie performance yet since it is still in rehearsals - however we'll post the running time as soon as we have it.
Chips Rafferty from Belfast
I am quite sure the play will an absolute hit as it is not only a great story......., but my daughter [Claire] just happens to be in it!
.
Hiya, how do I find out what "colour" a performance is? The discounts are different for each when I ring, but I don't know where it's specified. Thanks.
Steve Bowyer from Chandler's Ford, Hampshire
Do you have any plans to take the production on tour? If so, where else will you go? Thanks
Peter Griffiths from Malvern Worcestershire.
I hope to witness the production on Thursday evening (weather permitting) I intend to travel by train. I hope to attend the gathering after the show on Thursday, but have to catch the eleven o'clock train from New Street Station. Could you, therefore, please inform me of the running time of the play. Thanks Peter
carole from Droitwich spa
Thankyou rep for another wonderful production. The set, direction and acting were all first class.
Steph from The REP
Thanks everyone for your comments and Carole I'm delighted to hear that you enjoyed the show. Just to answer a few questions - Peter the running time of the show is approximately 2 hours 30 minutes including one interval. Steve - we currently don't have any plans to take the production on tour, so catch it in Birmingham if you can! And finally to the person who asked about performance 'colours' - unfortunately we don't currently have the facility to show these on the website at the moment, but I can tell you that for this show Fri 19 to Mon 22 Feb are Green, all other Mon to Thu nights are Blue, all matinees are Red and Fri & Sat nights are Yellow. I hope this helps but do get in touch with the Sales Team on 0121 236 4455 if you need any further help with selecting your tickets.

Thoroughly enjoyed Dancing at Lughnasa. The stage design was particularly beautiful and took the audience straight to rural Ireland, to a quieter simpler time. Nowadays minimalism can often be an excuse for " can't be bothered" to something properly, the stage set was a breath of fresh air. The authenticity of the accents similarly showed an attention to detail which, again, is often missed. Even a Hollywood blockbuster with unlimited budget have an American actor playing Nelson Mandella with little attempt at authentic accent. So well done one and all, an enchanting story well acted and beautifully presented.

I would like to know if the play will be touring please and if so venues and dates.
Ros Grant from Bromsgrove
Very interested to see the play after watching the film. I took my father who grew up in Donegal in the 1930's and also had five sisters, so it was like a family memory for him almost. The acting was first class. Love the noise of the crow's by the way ... Very authentic!!
John and Liz from Birmingham
Beautifully acted and produced. Superb set. Engrossing story eliciting strong empathy with the characters. More similar please!
Tony Hewitt from Handsworth Wood
I have to agree the stage set was brilliant and captured to intimacy of the play perfectly. I saw a previous production of 'Lughnasa' at the Rep some years ago but this surpassed it completely in terms of capturing the spirit of the location and the period. Each role was cast perfectly. This is not a light weight piece but because you feel so involved with the family it holds you throughout.
Jonathan from Hall Green
A wonderful evocative performance and how I agree with the comment about the attention to detail in the set. What a pity there were so many empty seats tonight. The play intertwines humour, pathos, fear, loss, hope and memory in a rich mix and the acting was engaging. Another triumph!
Phil Barnes from Wylde Green B72
We saw the production last night and thought it was one of the very best evenings amongst many we have enjoyed at the Rep over the years. The set and the acting had great authenticity and combined to convey the surface humour and the underlying tragedy with total conviction. Congratulations to everyone involved in the production. Phil and Sue Barnes
Malcolm Flanagan from Sutton Coldfield
Superbly acted and well staged, whilst a sad story, the cast put in 100% and the audience applause at the end was truly deserved.
Jacqueline Bayliss from Hall Green
We saw the production last night, great cast & staging. Good to see Peter Gowen on a Birmingham stage at last!
Eva Easthope from West Bromwich
Went to see the show on Friday and it was simply fabulous. The set in particular was stunning. Congratulations to all.
Jamie from Bearwood
I don't often go to the theatre mainly because I'm loathed to do so, however we to see this last night and enjoyed. Excellent set, story and acting. Lovin Your Work Guys
