The Door

The Door is The REP’s studio theatre. This theatre is basically a black-box with flexible seating that can form a range of formats seating between 140 and 190 people. There is no formal stage nor proscenium arch, and because it is a small space this creates an intimate performance environment for both the actors and the audience.

The theatre was re-named The Door in 1998, when artistic policy led to its dedication as a venue solely for the commissioning, presentation and production of new writing. Whilst The Door still fulfils this role currently, The REP holds new writing central to its artistic policy and sees this distinction between the two theatres becoming less apparent over time.

Currently two to three new plays are produced in The Door each year and run for about three weeks. The programme is complemented by visits from the best new-writing companies and a special strand of work for the very young. The Door also provides appropriate development space for new, and often less formal or traditional, artists and forms of theatre.

Door productions occasionally transfer to other new writing venues and go on regional tour.
