Phil Bateman
Phil grew up in Camberley, Surrey, and studied music at Birmingham University.
Phil was one of the original creative team for Our House in the West End, writing the vocal arrangements, underscore and dance arrangements.
He then became Musical Director on Olivier Award-winning Billy Elliot – The Musical. He helped create the show and train the children, and conducted the show for the first year of the run.
Recently he has been Musical Supervisor and has written vocal arrangements for a new musical Imagine This at Plymouth Theatre Royal (Summer 2007), which is hoping to transfer to the West End at the start of 2009.
This Summer, Phil will also be Musical Director on Gigi at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre. Other theatre credits include: Peter Pan (Chichester Festival Theatre); Piaf (Sheffield Crucible); Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella (Bristol Old Vic); Return To The Forbidden Planet (national tour); Wild, Wild Women (Orange Tree); The Canterbury Tales (national tour); Winnie The Witch (Birmingham Repertory Theatre); Love In A Maze and Cabaret (both Watermill, Newbury); Pirate Jenny (Basingstoke Haymarket); and Grand Night For Singing (Latchmere and East Africa tour).
Composing credits include: Body Story 2 (Channel 4); La Maison Suspendue (RSC); The Clandestine Marriage (Watermill); Faithful Dealing (Soho Theatre) and five tours of BBC2’s Polka Dot Shorts and ITV’s animation series The Wheels On The Bus.
Phil also worked as singing coach/vocal arranger, with Guy Chambers, on Kinky Boots (Buena Vista), a British film written by Tim Firth which was released in September 2005.
