Library of Birmingham

Birmingham Repertory Theatre is engaged in a joint development with the new Library of Birmingham to create an internationally unique centre of culture and knowledge in Centenary Square.

The Library of Birmingham will be built next door to and physically integrated with The REP. They will be joined at ground floor and mezzanine levels and will share a foyer, bars, restaurants and a new 300 seat studio theatre.

Whilst the Library of Birmingham and The REP will retain their own clear identities, the development will bring together an exciting and complementary mix of cultural activity, opening up creative possibilities in shared interest areas such as new writing and the emerging artforms of performance poetry and live literature. Having a third, flexible mid-scale auditorium will also significantly expand the range of dramatic works The REP can produce and present.

As part of the proposed development The Door will become a much-needed space for the theatre’s many and various learning and participation activities, as well as retaining its ability to present small-scale shows and work-in-development.

The development is scheduled for completion in 2013. To find out more click on the Frequently Asked Questions link on the left. We’ll also be updating this site with news and photos as the project progresses.
